What is a Diesel Particulate Filter?

A DPF is an exhaust aftertreatment device that captures particulate matter such as soot and ash.

To reduce emissions from diesel vehicles, the DPF captures additional physical “waste” produced by the diesel engine, namely particulate matter such as soot. This waste must be burned periodically to regenerate the filter. The regeneration process burns off excess soot deposited in the filter, preventing harmful exhaust emissions and the black smoke that diesel vehicles often emit when accelerating.

Causes of DPF Failure

The diesel particulate filter will only regenerate when certain conditions are met. Due to short distances and low speeds, the engine temperature and exhaust gas temperature may not reach the optimal level, and the vehicle cannot meet the self-cleaning requirements of the filter.

What are the symptoms of a clogged DPF?

The life of the diesel particulate filter is affected by quality, and it may also fail due to improper maintenance. Using the wrong type of oil, using low-quality fuel, and frequently driving at low oil levels will cause the DPF to clog and shorten its service life.

How do you tell if the filter is clogged?

Usually, when the filter is clogged or there is an error in the system, a warning light will light up on the dashboard. When it lights up, you know that your filter may be clogged and may need to be regenerated.
